Social Security Number (SSN)

Essential information for U.S. residents and international students.

Overview

A Social Security Number (SSN) is a numerical identifier assigned to U.S. citizens and other residents. Originally intended to track earnings and provide benefits, it is now used for tax purposes, credit reporting, and more.

Nearly all U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and temporary or working residents have an SSN. Even non-working residents can obtain one due to its essential role in business and government operations.

SSNs and Social Security cards are issued by the Social Security Administration (SSA) under the legal framework provided by Section 205(c)(2) of the Social Security Act.

The Flow for USANU Students to Obtain an SSN

Follow these steps to secure your SSN while studying in the U.S.:

1. Meet with USANU

Schedule an appointment with your USANU advisor or designated school official (DSO) to discuss your eligibility and the process for obtaining an SSN.

2. Employer Verification

Secure an internship or employment position, as many SSN applications require proof of work. Meet with your potential employer to ensure all necessary documentation is prepared.

3. Fill Out the Required Form

Complete the necessary SSN application form (Form SS-5) provided by the SSA. Your DSO or employer can guide you through this step.

4. Internship Course Enrollment

Enroll in the USANU-approved internship course (such as CPT) if required. This course helps validate your employment and ties it to your academic program.

5. Prepare Your Documents

Gather all necessary documents including your passport, visa, Form I-20, and proof of employment/internship.

6. Visit the SSA Office

Submit your application along with all required documents at your local SSA office. Follow any additional instructions provided by the SSA.
